January: 2023 MLK Day of Service in Nashville

 



Every year, I participate in the MLK Joint day of Service in Nashville, TN. As many know, I attended Vanderbilt University for my undergraduate studies. Since I was already in town for a wedding, I was super excited to participate again this year. The day lasted from 10am to 4pm in which we did various tasks with many others schooled and organizations. As seen in the picture above, we helped sort and move potatoes and other produce for those in need. Many organizations that we helped with their projects were Feed the Children, Heartbound Ministries, Hope Kids, STARS Nashville, and so many more .  It felt really good to see such a large number of people out and help serving while also celebrating a great holiday. Since the pandemic started, it has been hard to have these large scale volunteer opportunities and efforts which I know has strained organizations that are dedicated to serving the community so this was very refreshing to witness and be a part of.  love this event because while serving they make sure you understand the legacy of MLK and how that plays such a large role today. All these volunteers are of different backgrounds, color, and religions yet they band together for the benefit of others. In the world we live in today that os also something I am so grateful still exists.  

Throughout or service we were able to hear from many speakers who gave uplifting speeches as a way to inspire young adults for a better community. This is one of the reasons I love this event because it doesn't just feel like something people do to get some hours but something that has more meaning and Powell care about.

Pious Project: 8th Annual Feed the Hungry

This year, Tulane’s biomedical science department hosted a community service event and participated in Pious Project’s 8th Annual Feed the Hungry event. This event was hosted in several cities across the nation where students and volunteers in the community came together to address issues that the city experiences with food insecurity. I did a lot of community service in my undergrad career so once I heard about this opportunity I was very eager to help. The event was held on the 24th of this month from 12pm-2pm. We were able to assemble and package 500 sack lunches consisting of a sandwich, snacks, and water. This was such a heart-warming experience as we were able to help people we most likely walk by everyday. We had a debrief session in which I heavily reflected on the certain privileges I have and the things that I take for granted. October: Volunteer at Touro Health & Curriculum

  This month I was supposed to begin volunteering in the Emergency Department at Touro Hospital at LMCM Health. Unfortunately, my screening has been taking a while as the office had to move after I applied. Once my results come back from my screening, I should be ready to volunteer! I am really excited to start working so closely with several health professionals as well as meeting new patients. I won’t be able to take any pictures inside, however, I got some cool new gray scrubs that I can post next month before I go in for my shift.  As far as curriculum goes, the exams were definitely more challenging this month. Despite that, I challenged myself to find new study spots and tricks. I started using the study rooms in the BMS lounge and I loved using the large white boards! I also found out that rewriting notes and summaries with the “old school” paper and pen method worked really well for me.

November 2022: Archer High School & Angel Tree

    Archer High School Volunteering  I went home for Thanksgiving and was able to volunteer at the high school I attended. I try to do this anytime I go home on breaks, especially now because they always have classrooms that need help. I was able to volunteer on November 17th and 18th before their students went on their Thanksgiving break. On Thursday, I helped with the Friendsgiving activities in the Special Education department (I didn’t take pictures just because I wasn’t able to get consent from their parents). I often worked with this department when I was in high school so it was so much fun going back and helping them with serving    food and the arts and crafts activities. On Friday, I was able to help in the attendance office which they needed seeing that so many students were getting checked out for the holidays and many documents needed to be filed.
