April 2023: Touro Health

Image
This month had a lot going on as we neared the end of this program. For volunteering, I continued once a week on Tuesdays at Touro Health from 4pm-7pm. At times the ED can be a little boring as there aren’t many things happening all the time, however, I still take the opportunity to observe the staff and how they interact with the patients. I feel as though I am gaining a lot of nuanced experience by just by observing some of the tasks and how they handle situations that I otherwise would not be exposed to.  April was filled with a bunch of stuff to do an dit defiantly kept me busy. Starting with the pharmacology crawfish boil. It was such a beautiful day and it was nice to chat with my peers and faculty about further plans. I also loved it because I am obsessed with crawfish and especially from New Orleans because crawfish from Georgia is not the best. After that we had the NBME which was pretty difficult fro me. I struggled on effective studying and it really stressed me out. On top

March 2023: Touro Health

This month I continued to volunteer in the emergency department at Touro Health. I volunteered from 4pm-7pm on the 7th and 14th. I am a starting to get the hang of things in the department and meet new medical personnel in the department. I also am enjoying listening to the nurses talk about what they are administering to the patients. I am able to recognize a lot of the drugs which makes me excited as well. This month has had a lot of social events that I enjoyed very much. The first crawfish boil of this month was really good but cold! I love crawfish so I was excited to go and meet new people. I wish the weather was a little better because I couldn’t stay long. The pharmacology crawfish boil had much better weather and was very enjoyable as well. It was a great way to take a study break and enjoy each other’s company with the great weather. It was also my first time at the Fly and it was really beautiful. That is definitely a place I will go back to take a walk or do some studying.

February 2023: Touro Health and Mardi Gras

Image
This month I was able to engage in several volunteer opportunities. The first one was Recycle Dat consisted of volunteers collecting beads and cans to recycle during the Mardi Gras parades. I volunteered on February 11th and 12th at the St. Charles location from 1-4pm on both days. Although it was very rainy and cold on Saturday, I still enjoyed being able to see the parades but also help with the clean up on the streets. I was able to meet a bunch of other volunteers and interact with people along the route. I wasn’t able to get a spot for the Mardi Gras first aid tents but this was still a great alternative to that. I didn't get many pictures because it was rainy and I had bags in my hands but I caught a few.  The next opportunity I had was beginning my volunteering at Touro Health Emergency Department. I began that today and worked from 4pm-7pm. I didn’t take any pictures inside but was able to get a very awkward picture I sent to my mom which I am sure end up on facebook😂. Al

January: 2023 MLK Day of Service in Nashville

Image
Every year, I participate in the MLK Joint day of Service in Nashville, TN. As many know, I attended Vanderbilt University for my undergraduate studies. Since I was already in town for a wedding, I was super excited to participate again this year. The day lasted from 10am to 4pm in which we did various tasks with many others schooled and organizations. As seen in the picture above, we helped sort and move potatoes and other produce for those in need. Many organizations that we helped with their projects were Feed the Children, Heartbound Ministries, Hope Kids, STARS Nashville, and so many more .  It felt really good to see such a large number of people out and help serving while also celebrating a great holiday. Since the pandemic started, it has been hard to have these large scale volunteer opportunities and efforts which I know has strained organizations that are dedicated to serving the community so this was very refreshing to witness and be a part of.  love this event because w

December 2022: Second Harvest

Image
I started today by getting through the last exams for the semester and I am SO glad to have gotten through them. I definitely need this break as I am mentally exhausted from all the studying. I can say I am pleased with my performance from this semester but I definitely have some room for improvement for the spring. I knew this first semester would be a period of adjustment for me especially being in a new big city. However, I’m going to take some time over the break to reflect and identify some changes I can make to be even better in the spring semester.  After I concluded my exams and treated myself to some Starbucks, I went to volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans for three hours. Here I was able to stock some of the shelves and also serve food to others. This was another one of those humbling experiences as many people rely on these volunteers and  other people to prepare this food for them otherwise they would go hungry. It make me very grateful that I  don’t

November 2022: Archer High School & Angel Tree

Image
Archer High School Volunteering  I went home for Thanksgiving and was able to volunteer at the high school I attended. I try to do this anytime I go home on breaks, especially now because they always have classrooms that need help. I was able to volunteer on November 17th and 18th before their students went on their Thanksgiving break. On Thursday, I helped with the Friendsgiving activities in the Special Education department (I didn’t take pictures just because I wasn’t able to get consent from their parents). I often worked with this department when I was in high school so it was so much fun going back and helping them with serving    food and the arts and crafts activities. On Friday, I was able to help in the attendance office which they needed seeing that so many students were getting checked out for the holidays and many documents needed to be filed. I helped file letters and papers per grade level and also assisted the clerk with any errands she needed completed. It was so r

October: Volunteer at Touro Health & Curriculum

Image
This month I was supposed to begin volunteering in the Emergency Department at Touro Hospital at LMCM Health. Unfortunately, my screening has been taking a while as the office had to move after I applied. Once my results come back from my screening, I should be ready to volunteer! I am really excited to start working so closely with several health professionals as well as meeting new patients. I won’t be able to take any pictures inside, however, I got some cool new gray scrubs that I can post next month before I go in for my shift.  As far as curriculum goes, the exams were definitely more challenging this month. Despite that, I challenged myself to find new study spots and tricks. I started using the study rooms in the BMS lounge and I loved using the large white boards! I also found out that rewriting notes and summaries with the “old school” paper and pen method worked really well for me.
